Why does the EditLink control get generated within a Span tag

Hi Guys,

Does anyway know why the EditLink control generates an anchor link surrounded by a redundant span?

It's messing with my BootStrap dropdown layouts... and I can't see a simple way to change the HTML generated without using Jquery... which is just gonna and mess to my code.

Any ideas?
