Using something other than RAISERROR

Hello.. I have a form which when submittied, SQL creates a SHA1 hash of the information entered and checks it against existing entries in the database. If an entry already exists, the end-user is notified of such. If not, it's added. This uses RAISERROR for the error and I have Validate Type Database on the form for the error being returned. But I noticed that if there's an error with the insert,
