Dog-fooding XMod 5.0

XMod 5.0 takes another step closer to release.

On Saturday night, XMod 5.0 moved forward another notch toward release. We began "dog-fooding" it here on DNNDev.com. If you're unfamiliar with the term, it basically means that we're running XMod 5.0 on DNNDev.com - warts and all - to see how it behaves and responds and discover any new bugs that may be uncovered by using it on a daily basis. Over the coming days we'll be using it to create demonstration pages and updating existing modules with new information

Running XMod 5.0 on the site also necessitated an upgrade of XMod Calendar and XMod RSS Reader. So, we've produced compatibility releases of those modules and given them the 5.0 version number to indicate they're designed to run with XMod 5. Not much has changed with these two modules except the addition of some localization items. The 5.0 versions of XMod Calendar and XMod RSS Reader will be freely available to existing owners of the modules.

So, if you notice any bugs or problems on the site, please let me know.

As always, I encourage your feedback via comments to these blog posts.

Good news! Are there plans to bring the FormDetailView module up to date? <br><br>It would be *really really* great if it supported the {XMOD_Parameter:xyz} tag. <br><br>(and if you could go to edit templates and forms from its menu ;))<br><br>Cheers,<br>Foster

If you're referring to the DetailView module community project, right now we don't have plans to do so. We're not ruling it out but the focus at the moment is solely on XMod 5.0. Our hope was that, by releasing the source code for the DetailView module - which was not a module we created - others who used the module would contribute their changes to the project. Sadly, that hasn't been the case thus far.

Got it, thanks, we saw that, but since we haven't built dnn modules before, we haven't been ready to jump off some of our other objectives yet. But that detail module is extremley useful for us though, it's used at least once on just about every page, so we'll take that task and check it back in when we're done...<br><br>Cheers,<br>-AF

Kelly, when XMod 4 rolled out, I remember that I had serious problems using XMod 4 on many of my projects until the developer of the DetailView module, who had left the DNN universe for Community Server, graciously updated it and contributed it as a project here. Once he did that, I was able to do what I needed with XMod. I'm worried that this might be the case when you release XMod 5.0, unless you offer us the equivalent of the DetailView module as part of XMod 5.0. I'm not a coder so even though the module is available in open source, it won't help me until it would be available in a version compatible with XMod 5.0. It makes me wonder if you could consider adopting the detail view module as part of your products, since it hasn't worked out as a community project.

YodaRocks - actually while the source was contributed, I made it compatible with version 4. FYI, a standalone detail view is part of XMod 4 already. It was introduced in 4.2. It's invoked via URL parameters on a standard XMod module. See the help file topic "How Do I... Make XMod Display a Record's Details?".

I for one am eagerly awaiting the opportunity to give the dog a run out! I've got nothing but love for you Kelly... finger still on F5 :)

I use the detail view project module a great deal in one of my sites. As much as I rave about the help files in Xmod the detail view in Xmod 4.2+ needs a little help in the help files. What are the differences between the 4.2+ built in detail view and the detail view project module? As I understood it you could not do a "relational" type page by adding and filtering additional modules with the 4.2+ built in module like you can with the project module?????

Where shold we download a CTP that isn't expired yet? The one (CTP5) up in patches/hotfixes on snowcovered expires on 4-30-07.

Re: Dog-fooding XMod 5.0    By dnndev on 6/21/2007 11:08 AM
@CTP on snowcovered: Since we are so close to releasing, we won't have any more CTP's to release. I should remove those from the list at Snowcovered though. Thanks for the heads-up.

That makes sense. Is it possible to get an older version with a later expiration? We want to test/resolve issues with the detailview module so we can upgrade to the 5.0 version as soon as its available.

@FosterAF: I sent you an email to discuss this further

DetailView is mission-critical on my site also, but mostly because I need to place detail content on a separate page to capture item view statistics. Is there any chance that there is a hook/utility in version 5 that addresses this requirement? If so, I might be able to dispense with most, perhaps all, of my DetailView usage.<br><br>We're poised to move to a new host which provides DNN 4/ASP.NET v2, so I'm gratified to read these discussions now and get a sense for our challenges BEFORE we migrate. Hopefully a .NET2 version of DetailView will be available sooner rather than later so we can at least hang in there with XMOD4 until we figure out how to best take advantage of XMOD5.<br><br>Thanks very much, as this online community has really helped me grow/mature my use of XMod over the last two years.<br>

When I visit XMOD>Features>Grid Layout Sample and try to search the collection, it is always returning an error:<br>A critical error has occurred.<br>Index was out of range. Must be non-negative and less than the size of the collection. Parameter name: index

Re: Dog-fooding XMod 5.0    By dnndev on 6/25/2007 5:15 PM
@y01nk: Thanks for the heads-up. Apparently the error occurs when you're not logged in. I've logged the error and we'll investigate.

Re: Dog-fooding XMod 5.0    By y01nk on 6/26/2007 10:10 PM
FWIW- doing it to me when I am *logged in* too.

Re: Dog-fooding XMod 5.0    By y01nk on 6/26/2007 10:10 PM
FWIW: Noticed something else sort of ominous about the Layout sample error: the OTHER xmod modules on the page do not load- i.e., the links and testimonials show nothing.

@y01nk: Can you email me with your findings at kford@knowbetter.com?

Hey guys! I was wondering how things were progressing with 5.0? Is there a tentative release date yet? Thanks :)
